How it works
Clear Seas and UBC collaborate on predicting ship-source underwater noise and examining speed/noise/fuel trade-offs. The 2024 QVI report records physics-based modelling, bathymetry-conditioned machine learning and sea-data collection aboard CCGS Sir John Franklin. Its vessel-comparison task was then in progress, with electric-tug data scheduled before the Coast Guard vessel data.
A related optimization paper demonstrates simulated containership voyages with fixed mammal locations and simplified two-dimensional environmental assumptions. These are useful research results, while current institutional material still describes adaptive decision tools prospectively. A particular software version, validated operating envelope and collaboration or licence terms need confirmation before operational use.
