Capability profile
MDS develops and applies physical vapour deposition coatings to protect gas-turbine compressor airfoils against particle and fluid erosion and corrosion. BlackGold and ER-7 are named protective-coating products. MEERER is a surface-finish process that, combined with coating, is intended to produce highly polished airfoils that retain their finish during operation. MDS links that retention to compressor efficiency and reduced fouling, without publishing a numerical surface-roughness specification or a universal performance gain.
The coating service is supported by development and test capabilities. MDS lists erosion and corrosion testing, SEM/EDX analysis, fatigue and vibration testing, leading-edge erosion work, temperature testing and 3D scanning and modelling. Its Rapid Prototyping Centre develops coating systems and test methods. The relevant process and facility need to be identified for each application rather than assigning every listed capability or accreditation to every site.
Public evidence includes both supplier demonstrations and engine-specific collaborative work. MDS describes a volcanic-ash comparison in which an uncoated substrate eroded through after 2 kg of ash while BlackGold remained intact after 3 kg; particle characteristics, flow conditions and a complete protocol are not supplied. NCMS separately reports ER-7-coated T64 engines averaging more than 1,000 hours on wing in an undated project summary. These observations are useful application references, not a general multiplier for component life.
Qualification remains specific to the engine and coating version. MDS's historical announcement identified BlackGold certification for applications including the CFM56-7B. NCMS describes BlackGold v4 evaluation on T700-GE-401C hardware for flight safety, field service and possible subsequent qualification. Current applicability therefore depends on the approved coating specification and component work package.
These describe the reviewed application scope, not confirmed deployments, released requirements or procurement eligibility.
Commercial coating portfolio with historical engine applications and NCMS-reported service outcomes. Maturity differs by coating version and programme: the BlackGold v4 T700-GE-401C project describes evaluation toward possible qualification, while current part-specific approvals require confirmation.
Coating and surface-finish services are marketed for commercial, military and industrial gas turbines. Establish the airfoil part number, substrate and condition, current coating approval and processing site when scoping work.
A technology readiness level is not established by the reviewed public sources.
No reviewed Mission area or released Defence need connection is currently published.
These records support this capability and its published Mission area and Defence need connections. A source count is not a count of independent confirmations.

MDS describes a comparison in which an uncoated substrate eroded through after 2 kg of volcanic ash while BlackGold remained intact after 3 kg. It does not state particle properties, flow/velocity, sample count, test standard or correspondence to an engine mission. This is a supplier demonstration claim, not a quantified universal life multiplier. The page also attributes reduced leading-edge curl/field repairs on CH-46/T58 blades to coating use.
