How it works
Joint development with Surrey Sensors combines APM monitoring of contamination’s aerodynamic effects with waterproof micro-CTA airflow sensing. The work targets aviation, rotorcraft and wind-turbine applications; the combined systems are in development.
Technical detail
Core features
- APM uses pressure-based measurements to assess how contamination affects aerodynamic performance rather than only detecting the presence of ice.
- Surrey Sensors’ solid-state micro-CTA measures airflow through heat transfer and is designed to be waterproof; its integration with APM is the research task.
- The April 2026 joint release targets two new APM systems for aviation/rotorcraft and wind turbines. Support is attributed to Innovate UK and NRC, with 3C identifying NRC-IRAP.
