Operating context
UVic's Centre for Aerospace Research provides engineering, fabrication, integration and testing across uncrewed aircraft and small-spacecraft systems. In March 2026 UVic announced $4 million from PacifiCan for a Western Canada space-enabled industry cluster led by CfAR director Afzal Suleman. The initiative is intended to connect SMEs with ground stations, spacecraft testing, satellite data, research expertise and skilled personnel. That allocation is distinct from the separate $1.43 million AI drone-mapping project in the same announcement. A CanadaBuys partner-interest notice also described a Vancouver Island S/X-band ground station in relation to WildFireSat Global, but its September 3 deadline has passed. Industry users should confirm which assets are operational, who controls access, and the data, security and testing terms for a specific engagement.
