Operating context
Ocean Frontier Institute links ocean research with practical observing support and collaborative funding. Its Research Implementation Unit explicitly serves external partners through collaborative or contracted field work, including vessel and autonomous-surface-vessel support, instrument deployment, sensor integration and calibration, logistics and data stewardship. Sustained observing includes Bedford Basin sampling, Scotian Shelf CODAR current data and benthic platforms. External users can submit a service request to scope the assets and expertise needed. In April 2026 OFI announced 15 Seed Fund projects across Dalhousie, UQAR and Memorial, including AI glacier forecasting and glider-based ocean measurements within Transforming Climate Action. These grants support research development; they do not establish operational defence deployment. The current official site is ofi.ca, with offices at Dalhousie in Halifax and Memorial in St. John's.
