Kongsberg Discovery Canada Ltd’s Vancouver operation is physically in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia. It is a Canadian company in the KONGSBERG group, separately listed from Kongsberg Geospatial. Its local-addressed technical material covers M3 Sonar HF, Flexview HF and BerthWatch for underwater inspection, mapping and monitoring. An advertised Port Coquitlam engineering role describes sonar electronics development, integration, prototype testing and production support; it does not allocate particular HISAS work to that team.
HISAS2020 is the group technology examined here. Kongsberg Discovery launched it as a standalone synthetic aperture sonar on February 26, 2026, widening access beyond its earlier HUGIN AUV integration. Its product datasheet identifies Kongsberg Discovery AS in Horten, Norway as the accountable supplier. That distinction matters for a Canadian platform: a Canadian office and a global product catalogue do not establish local product ownership, manufacturing or contracting authority.
The technology combines high-resolution acoustic imaging and co-registered bathymetry. The useful question is how that performance is achieved on a named vehicle, at its survey speed and range, with a suitable navigation solution and processing path. The vendor’s current premium specification and its reported HUGIN Edge sea-trial result describe different levels of evidence; historical HISAS research helps explain the integration constraints but does not certify the new standalone configuration.
HISAS2020 ACR 80 is the fourth-generation sonar identified in Kongsberg’s February 26, 2026 standalone launch. The vendor attributes thousands of missions to the wider HISAS family; that heritage is distinct from acceptance of each new standalone host.
The Rev A datasheet specifies premium SAS imagery <10×10 mm, standard SAS <3×3 cm, bathymetry gridding <10×10 cm, area coverage 1.2 km²/h, 2–8 knots and 5–1000 metres seawater. Gridding is not an independently measured depth-accuracy result. The table gives 120–210 kHz, with a 20–40 kHz LF option, <90 W including processing, 6–50 MB/s data, two 800 mm transceiver modules of about 10 kg each, and a 12 kg processing bottle. The sheet flags export-control restrictions and specifications subject to change.
The vendor lists AUV/UUV, towfish, USV and submarine hosts; the integration text also describes surface ships and platforms operating an EM2042 or similar. Standard underwater cables and digital transducers ease interfaces but do not prove mechanical, acoustic, navigation or acceptance compatibility with an arbitrary platform. Georeferenced XTF (X21), Kongsberg.all (XYZ88), CARIS HIPS & SIPS and QPS Qimera support appear in the sheet, alongside named Kongsberg/Seatex and Exail PHINS navigation formats. Its IHO S-44 Special Order-support wording is not an inspected third-party certification of a complete survey system.
The supplied March interview names a FOCUS 3 ROTV integration following a December 2025 MacArtney MoU. MacArtney’s own March 5, 2026 post lists HISAS2020, EM2042 and EdgeTech eBOSS on an exhibition configuration. This corroborates a partner integration effort; it supplies no named customer acceptance or purchase value. The host’s 2–10 knot envelope and a separate 6000 m harness claim must not be substituted for the sonar’s operating limits.
Kongsberg’s later undated sea-trial story reports an estimated 13×13 mm result on HUGIN Edge. No exact trial date, mode, range, speed, raw dataset or independent acceptance report is given. That result does not establish the premium sub-10 mm specification. The interview’s 70–100 kHz conflicts with the launch/datasheet frequency and warrants model-specific clarification.
Synthetic aperture sonar coherently combines overlapping acoustic observations collected as a platform moves, creating a longer effective aperture than the physical array. Navigation and acoustic focusing therefore matter as much as a headline image pixel size. Historical FFI HISAS work identifies positioning, sound-speed estimates, track geometry, multipath, altitude and acoustic shadows as relevant constraints; wide imaging coverage does not guarantee equally valid bathymetry.
The current ACR 80 sheet specifies premium <10×10 mm imagery and standard <3×3 cm, while Kongsberg’s undated HUGIN Edge trial story estimates about 13×13 mm. It does not publish the trial mode or conditions needed to compare these directly. The March interview’s 70–100 kHz also differs from the sheet’s 120–210 kHz.
For a Canadian inquiry, Vancouver publishes sales.vancouver@kd.kongsberg.com and +1 604 464 8144. The HISAS sheet publishes Horten’s kd.sales@kd.kongsberg.com and +47 33 03 41 00. Those are separate documented contact routes; the party responsible for a particular Canadian integration and support agreement remains to be resolved.
The official office is at 1598 Kebet Way, Port Coquitlam, British Columbia V3C 5M5. The map uses a city centroid. Canadian-addressed product notes support local sonar offerings, and the Port Coquitlam recruitment page advertises multidisciplinary sonar development, test and production-support work. Public records do not quantify local staff, plant output or revenue.
RCMP contract M402504071, dated February 18, 2025, records CAD95,054.40 to KONGSBERG DISCOVERY CANADA LTD for equipment/parts. DFO contract 4500098888, dated December 31, 2025, records CAD78,686.35 for client DCE software. They establish awards to the Canadian legal supplier, not HISAS model purchases or Vancouver workshare. A 2017 DRDC Halifax/ENSTA/FFI paper used older HISAS1020 data for navigation research; that is a Canadian research connection, not proof of a Canadian operational fleet.
Port Coquitlam, British Columbia is the published city-level context for Kongsberg Discovery Canada Ltd — Vancouver. It does not imply a street address or exact facility location.

Feb 26, 2026
Kongsberg Discovery launched HISAS2020 as a standalone offering on February 26, 2026. The announcement extends a sonar family previously integrated with HUGIN AUVs to additional hosts. This is a group product development; the announcement does not allocate engineering, manufacturing or supply work to the Vancouver operation.
The Canadian-addressed M3 Sonar/Flexview application note and BerthWatch case study document marketed sonar offerings; Canadian buyer records establish awards to the legal supplier, without identifying HISAS.
Kongsberg’s group-company list reports Kongsberg Discovery Canada Ltd as 100% group-owned, per April 2026. Discovery AS in Norway and Geospatial Ltd in Canada are separately listed companies.
