Operating context
CMC Microsystems connects semiconductor and microsystems teams to CAD tools, process design kits, shared fabrication runs, packaging, testing and training. Its resources span microelectronics, photonics, MEMS and quantum technologies; brokered foundry access does not imply ownership of every facility. ISED committed C$120 million to FABrIC in 2024, providing a funded commercialization platform distinct from CMC’s proposed DUET initiative. FABrIC’s current challenge offers two tracks: fabrication-process development reimburses 40% of eligible costs and targets exit TRL 7 or above; IoT product development reimburses 37% and targets TRL 8 or above. Standard support is up to C$1 million, with exceptional cases considered, a 2.5% management fee and no eligible capital-equipment expenditure. Co-led projects require IP-sharing agreements. Round 4 expressions of interest are due December 1, 2026. Academic and commercial users should separately confirm tool licences, foundry access and exploitation rights. DUET’s proposed C$1 billion over five years expresses a dual-use policy direction, not an awarded or open funding programme. A device team should identify its process, fabrication slot, licensing route and commercialization milestone before selecting support.
